| Title: | Head Coach Women's Indoor/Beach Volleyball |
Bear Grassl, a four-time CCAA Coach of the Year, brings over 30 years of coaching experience and a proven track record of success to the College of Marin women’s volleyball program. Grassl was named head coach ahead of the upcoming season, ushering in a new era of competitive excellence and student-focused leadership for the Mariners.
Prior to joining COM, Grassl served 23 seasons as the head coach at Sonoma State University, where he compiled an impressive 384–225 career record. His tenure ranks him 39th in total wins among active NCAA Division II coaches. Under his leadership, the Seawolves made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, reached the Sweet Sixteen twice, and advanced to the Elite Eight in 2014. His teams also captured back-to-back CCAA Championships in 2014 and 2015—the first and only volleyball titles earned by a Northern California team in conference history.
Known for his creative, adaptable coaching style, Grassl has a reputation for maximizing the strengths of his rosters and developing complete student-athletes. During his time at SSU, he mentored 21 AVCA All-Americans, coached three CCAA MVPs, and helped launch the coaching careers of numerous former players. His philosophy emphasizes personal growth, resilience, and trust—on and off the court.
Grassl began his coaching career at El Molino High School, where he built a powerhouse program that went 276–75 and won five CIF NorCal titles, including a California State Championship in 1999. He is also the founder and longtime director of Empire Volleyball Club, a premier youth development program serving hundreds of athletes throughout Northern California.
“Athletes don’t just grow from winning—they grow from believing in themselves, trusting the process, and learning through challenges,” Grassl says. “Volleyball is our platform, but our work is about building people. That’s what drives me.”
Grassl’s commitment to excellence, character development, and lifelong learning positions him as a transformative leader for Mariners Volleyball. As the program prepares
