Mariners Perseverance Pays Off in Win Over Panthers

The College of Marin Men’s Basketball team faced the Merritt College Panthers on Saturday January 4th on the Don Barksdale Court. The Mariners put their teamwork and determination on display as they defeated the Panthers 61-59.  

First Half

The game began as a tightly contested affair, with both teams trading leads throughout the first half. The Panthers capitalized on key opportunities and headed to the locker rooms leading 33-29. Despite the deficit, the Mariners showed no sign of backing down.  

Second Half  

The Mariners came out ablaze, looking to earn their first conference win. They were focused and determined, forcing the Panthers to take tough shots and initiating Panther turnovers. Key hustle plays and contributions from several players helped the Mariners claw their way back into the game and ultimately secured the win.  

Player Highlights  

K’Hamani Olivacce led all scorers with 16 points. In addition to scoring, Olivacce contributed two rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Tomasi Pavihi tossed in 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Josh Clark made a significant impact off of the bench, scoring 11 points, and shooting 3-4 from the free throw line. Akili Johnson was the rebounding leader (9) with five defensive and four offensive rebounds.

Next, The Mariners will be traveling to Ukiah, CA to face Mendocino College on Wednesday, January 8th at 5:30pm.
