The Mariner offense proved to be very potent this week, scoring 48 runs between their three games while winning all three games.
Micah Marquez led the way for the Mariners, keeping the Eagles scoreless for 6 innings while striking out 8. When Marquez was done, the Mariners were up 7-0. After adding 5 runs in the seventh, the game was out of reach. The Eagles broke the shutout in the 9th, getting one run on an RBI groundout, but the Mariners held on to win 12-1.
The Mariners found themselves down 4-0 after three full innings at Yuba College on Thursday after a three-run homer and an RBI groundout. The Mariners got their scoring started with a solo homer from Ben Sebastiani and Gilbert Roth cutting the 49er lead in half, 4-2. Yuba would add one in the bottom half of the 5th, but the Mariners offense was able to take advantage of walks, errors, and added two hits to score 6 runs in the top half of the 5th.
The 6th started like many of the others, with a lead-off runner on. This time, it was John Bullock with a single, Dante Caiati reached on an error, and Ben Sebastiani smacked a single to load the bases. Roth’s second homer of the day cleared the bases and put the game out of reach. Yuba was able to add 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th, but the bullpen held strong and finished the job. The Mariners scored at least 2 runs in each of the last six innings to put up a football-style score, 22-11.
As in the last game, the Mariners found themselves trailing by two runs after 2 innings. In the 3rd inning, Adrian Ruiz got the scoring started with a laser beam homerun to left field to make it 2-1. After scoring a run on an error and a walk, Andrew Gamble delivered the big blow, blasting a two-run double off the left field wall, making the score 5-2 after 3 full innings.
The Mariners tacked on 3 runs in the fourth and another in the 5th before blowing the game wide open with another five-run inning in the 6th. Sebastian Elsner held the Storm at bay for three innings in relief, striking out two. Napa was able to score 1 run in the 7th, 8th and 2 more in the ninth, but Mariner pitching held strong, getting the win 14-6.
The Mariners open conference play next week with three games against the Contra Costa Comets. Tuesday and Saturday will be at Contra Costa, while Thursday’s game will be at the College of Marin.
