Mariners Alum Marcus Chiu Drafted in the 2020 Rule 5 MLB Draft

With the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings fully underway last week, Mariner’s Alum Marcus Chiu was drafted in the 2020 Rule 5 MLB Draft. Marcus was selected in the 3rd round by the Miami Marlins.

Marcus Chiu is a 2015 graduate of San Marin High School and made the decision to continue his academic and baseball career with the College of Marin. Marcus played two seasons for the Mariners and had one of the best careers in program history. His sophomore season, Marcus led in all offensive categories including leading the team with 13 home runs. Overall in his Mariners Baseball career he played 78 games, had 100 hits, a batting average of .349,  scored 89 runs, had 19 doubles, 4 triples, 16 HR, 70 RBI's and 42 BB.

Marcus was awarded the 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association Rawlings All American 2nd Team  and 2017 Northern California-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region 1st Team while at College of Marin. While wearing the Mariner uniform, he led the Bay Valley League with Runs batted in and home runs and was awarded the 2017 BVAL All-Conference Player of the Year. Marcus would graduate from College of Marin in the spring of 2017 and be drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 15th round of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft.

"My time at College of Marin helped me become the player I am today because of the amazing coaching staff. The coaches genuinely cared about us becoming not just better baseball players, but just better human beings. They took time away from their families to help us and that meant a lot to me” said Marcus.

Chiu would then have the opportunity to go play MLB Minor League Baseball for the Dodgers.  In his three years in the Minors, Marcus played in 228 games with 179 hits while batting .236 with 129 runs, 103 R’BIs, 38 doubles, 12 triples, 28 HR's, 84 BB, and .416 SLG.

“I am excited for this new start. I learned a lot from my time with the Dodgers, but I am excited to bring what I learned there to the Marlin’s Organization,” said Marcus. “I am always excited to keep learning and it is a good feeling to feel wanted by an organization.”

“We are grateful for the opportunity to have coached Marcus at College of Marin for two years. He continues to demonstrate and be an example of great work ethic, talent, and the desire to be great,” said Coach Steve Berringer, “For him to be drafted in the Rule 5 MLB draft, shows that other Major League Baseball organizations are noticing his talents and work ethic. Marcus continues to be an amazing representative of the College of Marin baseball program and we are all extremely proud of him.”

We are very proud of the professional baseball players at every level as they continue to represent College of Marin and the baseball program. Marcus’s parting words to current and future Mariners were, “Why not go do what you love, 15 years from now you don’t want to look at your life with regrets. Always go try to go after what you want.”

We at College of Marin wish Marcus a great season as he approaches spring training in 2021. Go Mariners!
