Sophia Bruinsma Named February Women’s Mariner of the Month

Freshman Swimmer Sophia Bruinsma had an impressive pair of meets in the month of February, earning her the Women’s Athlete of the Month award from College of Marin Athletics. The Redwood High graduate competed at the Laney College Sprint and the Sacramento City College Invite, earning five top ten finishes in those two meets.

Bruinsma’s first race of the year was the 100 Yard Butterfly at Laney College on February 9th. She took fourth place with a time of 1:24.15, just off the podium. She followed that performance with the 100 Yard Breast where she narrowly missed out on the victory. She placed second with a time of 1:19.54. Less than two seconds behind the winning time.

Her final event of the day and the meet was the 50 Yard Freestyle. The sprint race went down to the wire as Bruinsma took third place in 27.80 seconds, just behind teammate Dominique Duro and a whisker behind the first place finisher.

The Mariners second competition of the month and the season took place at Sacramento City College on February 23rd. It was a hyper competitive meet with teams from all over Northern California participating.

Bruinsma opened her day with the 200 Yard Breast. In a very tight race she took ninth just seconds off the lead with a finishing time of 2:57.74. She also took part in the 100 Yard Breast later in the day. Bruinsma also finished in ninth with a time of 1:17.47 it was a highly bunched field as less than five seconds separated fourth from tenth place.

 The freshman has a strong season in her pocket already and looks to continue to build through the rest of the 2018 Swim Season.
