Sophomore Forward Derek Morgan was named the Men’s Mariner of the Month for November. Morgan excelled throughout the month of November, and while his team was held winless, it was not for lack of effort on his part.
In five games in the month of November Morgan averaged 18.8 points on 50% from the field, while grabbing 9 rebounds per game
The Mariners lost their season opener 77-75 at Skyline College. Morgan was tied for the team lead in points with 24 in that game. He added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks and he tried to rally his team for the victory. Morgan’s second game of the year against Allan Hancock saw him score 17 points with four rebounds and two assists on the afternoon.
On November 10th against the Modesto Pirates, Morgan led the Mariners in practically every statistical category. The Mariners lost 90-72, but Morgan scored 19 points on 8-16 shooting, Added a game high 16 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Against Butte College on November 18th, Morgan recorded his second double double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds on 6-11 shooting. 10 days later at Butte, Morgan scored in double figures again as he tallied 19 points, eight rebounds, two steals and an assist in the team’s loss to the Roadrunners.
Morgan has improved immensely since his freshman season, he has increased his scoring average more than seven points per game, while pulling down two more rebounds per game in the process.
With several months of the season to go, it will be entertaining to see how high Morgan can fly this year.
