Mariners’ Home Streak Snapped By Solano 3-1

College of Marin Volleyball saw their perfect record at home ended by the Solano College Falcons on Friday. Marin, previously 5-0 at home, fell to Solano 3-1. The Mariners won the first set and kept it close in the second and third, but an injury to outside hitter Sasha Urban made the uphill battle even steeper. The Mariners ran out of gas in the fourth set, but showed they could compete with the best in the Bay Valley Conference.

The first set was the most even of the match. Marin opened with a 5-4 lead before Solano responded with an 8-2 run to pull ahead 12-7. The Mariners responded with five straight points to tie up the match. They extended their run to a 19-16 and held off a late charge by Solano for a 25-23 first set win.

The second set began even as Marin lead 8-7 but Solano returned serve to take a 20-17 lead. They lead 23-19 before a Mariners timeout, but it was not enough to stave off a 25-21 second set loss to tie the match up at 1-1.

The third set was all Solano to start. The Falcons raced out to an 8-2 lead and extended it first to 14-2 and then to 20-5. Sasha Urban sustained an injury during the third set and was forced to exit the game.  The Mariners battled back well in the latter stages of the third set, bringing it to 22-14, before ultimately falling 25-17.

Solano maintained their momentum through the fourth, as they led 11-6 and later 18-9 before finishing off of the Mariners 25-14 in the deciding set.

It was a grueling match for both teams. The Mariners were led on the offensive end by Salomi Galodamu and Alejandra Leon who each had a double-double. Galodamu had 16 kills, three block assists and 18 digs while Leon had 11 kills, three aces, a block assist and 19 kills on the evening. Sarah Harris contributed 28 assists, 15 digs and four kills while Urban had seven kills and five digs before her injury.

The Mariners fell to 4-2 in conference play with the Yuba 49ers on the horizon. Marin plays hosts to Yuba on Wednesday, October 10th at 6pm.
