A two-week layoff was unable to energize the Mariners as they fell to Merritt College in the Bay Valley opener on Friday. A sluggish first half put Marin down by 22 at the half, and while they played almost even in the second half, the deficit was too much to overcome as they lost 81-56.
Merritt began the game with a 20-9 run as Marin's shots would not fall. The second quarter was much like the first as the visitors opened up a 43-21 halftime lead. The Mariners were unable to find an offensive rhythm. Regan Andel had a solid first half with seven points as she did an excellent job in the post with a trio of layups.
The Mariners switched things up to start the second half and found an offensive flow in which they scored 22 points in the third quarter. Amari Allison scored six straight in a run that brought Marin back within 16 points. Unfortunately, the home team was unable to cut further into Merritt's lead as they responded with an 6-0 run to finish out the quarter with a 63-43 lead. The final 10 minutes were sluggish as the official's whistles became common place. The final score was academic as Merritt emerged with the 25-point victory.
The two teams combined for 43 personal fouls and 60 free throws. Merritt took advantage of their 31 free throw attempts, making 24. Marin was less than successful making just 10 of 29 attempts.
Allison led Marin in scoring with 13 points and chipped in eight rebounds and five steals. Andel had a double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Marin travels to Ukiah to face Mendocino College on Friday, December 30th at 5:30PM.
