The Mariners battled the Foothill College Owls on Tuesday in Los Altos Hills. Marin fought and clawed, but could not pull out the road victory. Marin went into the break tied up at 1-1, but a pair of goals early in the second half by Foothill proved to a be too large of deficit to come back from. Peter Carroll scored his first Mariners' goal and Daniil Menshikov bagged his second of the season.
Marin's defense started out strong as they denied a number of early forays into their defensive third. Foothill continued to pressure, until they found a breakthrough in the 35th minute. Iver Lyche fed Brandon Holguin in the box, who beat the Mariners' keeper for a 1-0 lead. Payam Ravanfar made his debut for Marin in the match and did well with six total saves, three in each half.
The Mariners wasted no time in responding to the Owls' goal as they battled back in the 40th minute. Center forward Peter Carroll opened his Marin account with a close-range goal to knot the score up at 1-1.
After halftime, it was all Foothill as they turned on their attack. In the 48th minute, Akinori Ideta untied the match with a goal off a pass from Neel Prasad. 12 minutes later Miguel Arguello doubled the Foothill advantage with a pass from Brandon Holguin. Trailing 3-1, the Mariners did not give up the fight.
Despite having 20 minutes to draw level, the Mariners could not score an additional goal and fell at the final whistle 3-2.
The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 1-2 on the season. They have four goals on the year, with Menshikov the team leader with a pair.
The Mariners look to even their record at 2-2 with a home match against Modesto College on Thursday, September 5th at 4pm.
