A contentious match went in Marin's favor on Tuesday as the Mariners defeated the Yuba College 49ers 3-2. Yuba lost two players to red cards but continued to fight, tying the game on two separate occasions before Marin put the game away for good in the final five minutes of the match.
The game played to draw until the waning moments of the first half. Marin's Johnathan Blanco received a pass from Alex Argueta and beat Yuba keeper Abraham Juarez. Immediately after the goal, extracurricular contact between Juarez and Blanco resulted in a red card to Juarez, leaving the visitors without their starting goalkeeper. The first half whistle blew and the Mariners held a 1-0 advantage halfway through the match.
Despite missing a man, it did not deter Yuba College who were relentless on the Marin goal. They could not draw even immediately and faced a big disadvantage when a second Yuba player was shown a red card for dissent and sent off from the pitch. Nine man Yuba did all they could to be competitive and managed to tie the game at 1-1 as Adrian Hoyos scored off a pass from Kobe Bancroft in the 60th minute.
The Mariners responded in kind as Anthony De Leon scored a long goal from outside the box off a pass from Jason De Leon. He took the pass in the middle of the field and lofted the keeper from 25 yards out to give Marin a 2-1 lead.Yuba continued to discontent the Mariners as a few minutes later Hoyos struck again from close range to tie the match up yet again at 2-2.
After allowing two goals the Marin defense tightened up and took control of the under manned Yuba midfield. Jason De Leon played in Jerry Maldonado from close range, he took a deft single touch to flick the ball into the back of the net to give Marin a 3-2 lead in the 85th minute. Yuba tried, but were unable to tie the match a third time as Marin took the victory at the final whistle.
Blanco scored his third goal of the season while Anthony De Leon and Maldonado scored their first of the season. Jason De Leon recorded his second and third assists of the season. In goal, Colin Sneddon made seven saves for the Mariners.
"Crazy game today with Yuba getting two reds" Said Coach Mike Crivello, "Credit to them for not quitting, playing their hearts out, to almost win the game. We did just enough to get the result."
Next up for the Mariners is a visit to Merritt College on Friday, November 3rd.
