Men’s Soccer Falls To Contra Costa 5-1

The Mariners hosted a tough foe from Contra Costa on Friday, and competed well from the outset. Though the final score line read 5-1 in favor of the visitors, the Mariners were up to the task for 80 of the 90 minutes of play. Unfortunately in those 10 minutes, the Comets scored four goals to put the game out of reach.

The Mariners and Comets appeared evenly matched for the first 30 minutes of play. Both teams had chances but could not break the scoreless draw.

The tide shifted in a hurry as Contra Costa's Addison Escobar hit a ball which took a fortunate bounce to evade Mariners keeper Colin Sneddon and give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. From there the flood gates opened as Contra Costa poured in three more goals over the next ten minutes. James Sibrian scored next off a pass from Alejandro Fernandez. Escobar scored a second goal unassisted to go up 3-0 in the 43rd minute. In first half stoppage time a series of beautiful passes on a counter attack netted Sibrian his second of the match just before the first half whistle.

Despite trailing 4-0, the Mariners looked the part of a competitor for the second half. Contra Costa did score a fifth as Fernandez got on the score sheet, but it was against the run of play as Marin had a half dozen free kicks from close range that could find the target.

In the 85th minute Marin got on the board, as Joseph Ndungu scored from the right channel off a pass from Alejandro Gonzalez Flores to cut the score to 5-1. Things got heated in the final moments of the match, but neither team saw serious discipline from the pocket of the referee.

"Well this game felt very much like the first time we played Contra Costa." Said Coach Michael Crivello, "We let the game slip away within about a ten minute span at the end of the 1st half and we just couldn't recover. All credit to Contra Costa they played very well today."

In goal, Colin Sneddon made eight saves, while Ndungu scored his second goal of the season while Flores notched his second assist of the year. Next up for the Mariners is a home match against Merritt College on Tuesday, October 24th at 2PM.
