Mariners’ dynamic duo of Eric Mireri and Joey Potts were to the Bay Valley Conference First Team at the post season meetings. Both made big strides in their second seasons in black and gold as they propelled Marin to a 14-13 record and fourth place finish in the conference.
Mireri competed in all 16 Bay Valley Conference games and averaged 12.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. He shot 42.8% from the floor and 83.3% from the free throw line.
Mireri recorded his highest conference scoring effort against Contra Costa College in the Mariners 95-71 loss, where he poured in 21 points to lead Marin. His best all around game was on January 9th in Pittsburg where the sophomore guard led the Mariners to a 75-71 victory and recorded a triple double in the process. He scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dish out 13 assists in the win. Mireri also finished second in the Bay Valley Conference in assists per game.
While Mireri dominated from outside, Potts did the majority of his work in the paint on both sides of the ball. The sophomore center averaged 10.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in 16 conference games. He shot 65.1% and 46.9% from the free throw line. In the entire 2018-2019 season, Potts totaled 76 blocks and averaged 2.8 blocks per game. Potts was tied for third in the state in total blocks and was fifth in blocks per game.
Potts scored 19 points in the Mariners victory on the road against Los Medanos and added seven blocks as well. He had a second seven block game against Mendocino College on January 25th. The center had four double doubles in conference with a season high 13 rebounds against Mendocino on December 21st.
The two Mariners’ sophomores are just beginning their college careers and look to build on their successes at the next level.
