College of Marin Basketball Holds On At Contra Costa 83-79

Mariners' Basketball played an almost excellent all-around game on Friday evening in San Pablo. Marin built a sizeable lead down the stretch before holding on as the hosting Comets stormed back in the final minutes. The Mariners led by double digits with two minutes remaining and fended off Contra Costa to secure an 83-79 victory. Zamaria Odom had an impressive double double as he led Marin in points and rebounds.

College of Marin was the better team for much of the game and they showed it with their superior job on the glass. Although the Mariners did not shoot particularly well, they were excellent on second chance opportunities with 22 offensive rebounds.

Marin built a lead at halftime and led by 16 points in the final minutes. The Mariners opted to empty their bench which proved to be dicey. A few turnovers, fouls and poor possessions allowed Contra Costa to score 12 points in a very short span of time. Fortunately, the Mariners steady the ship enough to wind down the clock and head home with a road victory 83-79.

Marin's win, coupled with a vacated loss to Merritt puts the Mariners in second place in the Bay Valley Conference with an 8-3 record behind only Yuba College.

Odom had 20 points and 12 rebounds, an assist and three steals in one of his finest all-around performances of the season. Joey Potts also had a double double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in the game. Potts leads the state with 3.0 blocks per game and 66 total blocks. Eric Mireri added 11 points and Malik Ghiden chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Marin's toughest test of the season awaits them on Wednesday, February 6th. They travel to Marysville to face off against the Bay Valley Conference leading Yuba College 49ers at 6pm.
