After opening conference play with back to back victories, the Mariners were handed their first loss in the Bay Valley Conference on Wednesday by the Contra Costa Comets. Both teams scored readily n the first half but Marin's shooting waned down the stretch as they fell 95-71 to the visiting Comets. Despite the loss, the Mariners had excellent performances from Eric Mireri, Joey Potts and Jalen Chandler.
The Mariners did a solid job of generating their own offense in the first 20 minutes of competition. Mireri scored 11 on three triples and a pair of free throws. Zamaria Odom and Joey Potts each added nine, while Jalen Chandler was a spark off the bench with 10 first half points.
Contra Costa leaned heavily on their starters for the majority of the game and it paid dividends early on. Isaiah Attles was dominant in the first half with 22 points. Elijah Canales was 4-4 from downtown and had 13 total first half points while Eric Jones chipped in eight.
Contra Costa went to the line 15 times in the first half while Marin managed just seven first half free throw attempts. The Mariners trailed by eight 51-43 at the break.
The second half saw the visitors pull away early as the Mariners were unable to score as freely as they did in the opening half. Odom was held scoreless in the second half and Potts was limited to only four points. Chandler chipped in seven more in the second half while Mireri lived at the line to net 10 in the second half.
It was not enough as Contra Costa continued their feverish scoring pace. Attles took a back seat to Evan Thompson who scored 18 after just five first half points. Canales had seven in the second half and Eric Jones chipped in 11 more including 9 of 12 from the free throw line. When the final buzzer sounded the Comets departed Kentfield with a 95-71 victory.
Mireri had 21 in total included four made three pointers and three assists. It was the sophomore's fourth 20-point game of the season. Chandler had 17 points, a season high with five rebounds and two assists while Joey Potts had a double double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Four Contra Costa players scored 19 or more, led by Attles with 28. Thompson had 23, Canales, 20 and Jones 19. The rest of the team scored just five points in total.
Marin fell to 6-8 on the season and 2-1 in the Bay Valley Conference.
