Mariners' Basketball faced Yuba in arguably the toughest week of their conference schedule. After playing Contra Costa College on Wednesday, the Mariners were tasked with perennial favorite the Yuba College 49ers. Marin remained competitive throughout the game but could not overcome the depth of the visitors from Marysville in an 84-66 loss. Eric Mireri and Zamaria Odom shared high scoring honors for the Mariners with 15 each.
It was an explosive first half of basketball, as the offense for both teams flowed. Marin got into early foul trouble which resulted in 12 free throw attempts for Yuba, while the Mariners earned just seven in the same span. The outcome of the first half was a double-digit lead for the visitors 45-35. Mireri was the offense for Marin with 13 points in the first half of play while Bates was the high scorer for the 49ers with 12 in the first half.
The second half was similar to the first, but just a tad slower in pace. Marin limited Yuba's free throws but were generally stymied in the paint. Yuba slowly but surely continued to pull away through the half and by the end the buzzer sounded with an 84-66 victory in favor of the 49ers. Marin received contributions from Jalen Chandler who scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, and Odom who had nine in the final 20 minutes of play. Yuba was a model of balance as six players scored in double digits in the game, with Bates the team leader with 14.
Odom had 15 points, with eight rebounds and four assists. Mireri had 15 points and six assists as well. Chandler was excellent off the bench with 12 points, six rebounds, an assist, steal and a block. Ethan Battistini had a career best game with seven points and nine rebounds.
The loss dropped the Mariners record to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the Bay Valley Conference.
Next up for the Mariners is a road game at Los Medanos on Wednesday, January 9th and at home versus Solano on Friday, January 11th.
