Mariners Men's Basketball faced their toughest challenge of the season on Friday evening at the Foothill College Tournament. College of Marin matchup with the Fullerton College Hornets, the second ranked team in the state. The Mariners did ultimately fall 86-67 but they played very well in stretches against the Southern California powerhouse. Eric Mireri led Marin with 18 points on the evening while the Hornets were paced by Lance Coleman II's 28 points.
The first half saw Marin play furious defense to try and contain the athleticism of the Fullerton Hornets. Foul trouble abounded early as the Hornets worked their way into the double bonus early on and lived at the line. Coleman II led the way for Fullerton in the first half with 15 points from a variety of drives and mid-range jumpers. Joey Potts had an excellent first half in the middle for Marin with five made field goals for a ten-point half. The Hornets jumped out to a 44-28 lead after the first 20 minutes of competition.
The second half played nearly even, Marin stepped up their offense and matched Fullerton practically shot for shot down the stretch. The Hornets outscored Marin 42-39 as the Mariners refused to be outmatched. Mireri an excellent second half with 13 points including three made three pointers. Coleman II stayed at it for the Hornets with another 13 points in the final stanza.
Mireri had 18 points on the evening, with four made three pointers and four of four from the charity stripe. Potts had seven made field goals for 14 total points. RJ Cutkelvin had seven points including two made threes while Christopher Kress had a pair of triples in the first half for six points.
Overall it was a good showing for a Marin team lacking edge over the last few weeks. To compete with a top team looked to be a catalyst for the remainder of the Foothill College Tournament.
