Odom’s 17 Not Enough As College of Marin Basketball Drops Home Game To Chabot 77-64

Mariners' Basketball hosted their first game in nearly a month after several lengthy road trips. Unfortunately, familiar surroundings were not enough to push them to victory as Marin fell to the visiting Chabot College Gladiators 77-64 on Saturday. Freshman Zamaria Odom led Marin with 17 points but it was not enough to overcome Chabot.

The first half was a defensive showcase for both Marin and Chabot. The Mariners and their visitors found it difficult to score early on. Marin was limited to a handful of good looks, while Chabot relied on the offensive rebounding and put backs of Jabari Sweet to score. After a grueling 20 minutes of play, Chabot led by eight 36-28 led by the 12 points of Sweet. Marin kept it close in the half thanks to balanced scoring. Odom had seven, Joey Potts six and Eric Mireri five in the opening period.

The games pendulum swung complete towards Chabot to begin the second half. The Gladiators scored 14 of the first 16 second half points to take a seemingly insurmountable lead of 50-30 with fifteen minutes remaining in the game. The 2018-2019 Mariners showed their spirit and tenacity after falling down by twenty points.

Following a timeout, College of Marin displayed tremendous fight to close the deficit with Chabot. Marin's defense went into total shutdown mode as they limited Chabot to just six points while the offense scored 23. RJ Cutkelvin came off the bench to hit a pair of big three pointers, Odom had two layups and combined with Mireri to get to the line 10 times during that stretch. Franco Barefield made an acrobatic layup while drawing a foul and completed the three-point play to bring Marin within three at 56-53.

The visitors proceeded to push their lead back to double digits, and while Marin kept fighting, they could not overtake the Gladiators and fell 77-64. It was within a few possessions in the final minute, but Marin missed a number of shots and resorted to fouling which increased the final margin.

Odom had 17 to lead the Mariners and added six rebounds and two steals. Joey Potts was the only other Mariner in double digits with 11 points, he also chipped in eight rebounds and two blocks. Malik Ghiden, Mireri and Cutkelvin all finished eight points for Marin. The Mariners got to the line 28 times in the game but converted just 18 for a 64.3% clip.

Sweet had a double double for Chabot with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Chabot had 14 offensive boards as a team, primarily in the first half. Isaiah Ali had 14 points off the bench including four made three pointers while Akili Daniels and Jordan McGlory scored 12 and 10 respectively.

The Mariners have lost three consecutive games after winning two of their first three to start the season. They look to right the ship at Folsom Lake College on Tuesday, December 4th at 6pm.
