Mariners' Basketball suffered their first loss of the season at Columbia College on Saturday. College of Marin was locked in a defensive struggle with the Claim Jumpers where points were at a premium. The Mariners trailed at the half, and attempted to rally, but could not overcome their hosts in a 62-47 loss. Zamaria Odom had an excellent game with 17 points in a losing effort.
Marin struggled to put points on the board throughout the entire first half. The shooting, both midrange and from distance was clearly off as Marin managed just 13 points through the first 20 minutes of competition. Columbia was not much better, but they still grabbed a double digit lead of 23-13 heading to the halftime locker room.
Both teams unlocked their offense in the second half. Marin broke out of their shooting funk to post 34 points, nearly triple their first half output. Columbia was just a tad better as they scored 39 to extend their advantage to 15 by the end of the game.
Odom led the way for the Mariners with 17 points and eight rebounds. He also added two steals and an assist on the evening. Joey Potts was the second leading scorer with seven for Marin. As a team the Mariners shot just 28.1% from the floor and 19% from distance.
Their opponents from Columbia were just a bit better. Maurice Woods led the Claim Jumpers with 17 points while Yosnier Cobas had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Columbia shot 42.9% from the floor in the game.
Marin does not have much time to recover from Saturday's game as they play West Hills College of Lemoore. The game will be played Sunday in Sonora at Columbia College with tip off scheduled for 4pm.
