The COM Men's Basketball team certainly likes the month of December, as they began the month with a tournament title at the Foothill College Tournament and followed it up with a third place finish at the Modesto College Tournament. Five wins in six tries is good, but six in seven is better. The Mariners opened up conference play against Merritt College and grabbed the hard fought win 96-87.
The first half was a cagey affair with Marin grabbing an early eight-point lead before Merritt responded with a run of their own to take a one-point lead at the half 43-42. Derek Morgan led the way for Marin in the first half with 12 points, while Trevelin Queen added nine. The second half saw both teams at a torrid pace which benefited the hosts. Nylek Cobb had a monster final 20 minutes as he scored 13 points, while Queen chipped in another 13 of his own.
The final few minutes took an eternity as both Queen and Karim N'Diaye fouled out, but the Mariners held on to take the 96-87 win and put themselves atop the Bay Valley Conference. Queen led Marin with 22 points, Morgan had 16, JT Robinson also had 16, while Nylek Cobb had 15 points for the Mariners.
After losing their first two games of the season, Marin has emerged as one of the top teams in Northern California.
Head Coach Scott Thom was very pleased with his team's effort "It was fun for our guys to finally play a game at home. We have a ton to work on still, specifically closing out games."
The Mariners take their talents to Ukiah to face Mendocino College on Friday, December 30th at 7:30PM.
