Freshman third baseman Anthony Pomillia was named as Co-Mariner of the Month for January. He helped guide the Mariners to a 2-2 record in the opening month of the season. The Redwood High School grad recorded a.438 batting average in the first month of the season with three RBI and five runs scored.
He opened the year with a 2 for 4 effort in the Mariners 4-1 loss to Sierra College on January 25th. He hit a pair of singles in the second and ninth innings but was stranded in both cases.
The following day against Reedley, Pomillia was key in the Mariners 8-5 victory. After failing to reach base in his first two plate appearances Anthony had singles in three straight at bats. He singled and scored in the sixth, starting a rally that put Marin in the lead. He singled and scored again in the seventh before lining an RBI single in the eighth to plate the Mariners' final run of the game.
Pomillia enjoyed a few days off before the team's game at Cabrillo on January 29th. Marin ultimately fell by one run but Pomillia made his impact felt yet again. He drove in the Mariners' first run in the top half of the first with a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch in the third inning. He singled in the fifth and stole a base was unable to score. He reached base in the seventh on an error and came around to score in the seventh.
He was impactful in the final game of the month at Diablo Valley College on January 31st. He was retired his first two times at the plate but singled with one on and one out in the fifth. He came around to score on a wild pitch for his team's third run of the game. He came to the plate in the sixth and worked a bases loaded walk for an RBI before scoring on a double. Marin went on the win the game 7-6.
Though just a few weeks into 2019 season, the Mariners' third baseman looks primed for a big campaign.
