Offense was at a premium on Friday, but the Mariners got enough support for their outstanding pitchers to take the game 3-0 over Yuba College. Marin scored twice early, while the trio of Jason Wutsch, Michael Benz and Nick Roth combined to throw nine sparkling innings, allowing just five hits and one walk in the process. Wutsch earned the win, and Roth the save as Christian Merriwether served as the offensive sparkplug with two hits, a walk and three stolen bases on the afternoon.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning. The 49ers threatened in the top of the second with runners on the corners with away. A steal attempt of home was thwarted by the Mariners and they denied Yuba's chance to take the lead.
Marin went ahead in the bottom half the second as they loaded the bases with one down. Christian Merriwether singled to score James Harwell and with two away, Alex Davis reached on a fielding error that plated Davis Barkocy for a 2-0 Mariners lead.
Both team's traded zeroes through the seventh, though Yuba had excellent chances to score in the sixth and seventh innings. Benz took over with two away in the sixth and quelled the Yuba rally, he pitched through the eighth inning and held the 49ers scoreless.
Nick Roth took the hill in the ninth and allowed a leadoff single but retired the next three batters in order to preserve the 3-0 win and earn the save.
Barkocy had two hits and a run scored, while Munoz reached based three times with an RBI of his own. Wutsch pitched five and two thirds innings allowing four hits and walk with two strikeouts. Michael Benz threw two a third hitless and scoreless innings while Roth pitched the ninth for his seventh save of the year.
The win was Marin's seventh straight victory and fourth consecutive in Bay Valley Conference play. It was their first game of a busy stretch where the Mariners play six times in an eight day span.
